Aquatic and Semiaquatic Heteroptera (Nepomorpha) from the Strei River Basin

Abstract During a field campaign in the Strei River basin in August 2014, seven suitable habitats for aquatic and semi-aquatic true bugs were identified from the confluence of the Strei River with the Bărbat River down to the confluence with the Mureș River. Forty-eight individuals belonging to 15 species and nine families of aquatic and semi-aquatic true bugs were sampled. We mention two species considered rare in Romanian fauna: Hebrus montanus and Microvelia pygmaea. Approximately 740 species of Heteroptera have been hitherto recorded in Poland, including 705 species of the so called “terrestrial true bugs”. Data on their distribution in our country come mainly from the faunistic and ecological research. However, Heteroptera species faunistic lists often omit locations of specimens used in various kind of molecular studies due to several reasons: (1) such data are not always included in the source paper, (2) the location is given in the description of the nucleotide sequence of the specimen only in the GenBank, (3) the differences between typical faunistic and molecular studies result in inadvertent omission of the latter. An illustrated catalogue of Cylapinae (Insecta, Heteroptera, Miridae) from French Guiana is provided. Valdasus cerdai, n. sp. is described as new. Cylapus antennatus (Carvalho & Fontes, 1968), C. citus Bergroth, 1922, C. ruficeps Bergroth, 1922, C. tucuriensis (Carvalho, 1989) and Peltidocylapus caudatus Wolski, 2021 are recorded from French Guiana for the first time. The validity of Valdasoides Carvalho, 1989 is discussed.

An assessment was performed regarding the accuracy of various types of data deposited in the Barcode of Life Data system (BOLD) related to the true bug family Cydnidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera). Taxonomic nomenclature and classification, identification reliability, and the correctness of the data provided in the “Taxon description” were analyzed and commented on with respect to both available versions of the BOLD system, i.e. version 3 and beta version 4. Numerous mistakes in taxonomy, the relevance of the taxa names, and species misidentifications in BOLD version 3 were found and, more importantly, similar errors were detected in BOLD version 4 as well. Two new genera, each represented by a single new species, Cassisotropis aciformis Taszakowski et al. gen. et sp. nov. and Infernotropis madagascariensis Taszakowski et al. gen. et sp. nov. are described from Madagascar. Photographs and SEM micrographs of the male and female habitus, genital structures and selected morphological structures are presented. The first record of Fulvius anthocoroides (Reuter, 1875) in Madagascar and the checklist of Madagascan cylapines are also provided.

The Romanian fauna comprises two species of Aquarius Schellenberg, 1800, eight species of Gerris Fabricius, 1794 and one species of Limnoporus Stål, 1868, and we hereby update the distribution and provide insights on the phenology and ecology of all eleven species in this country. We furthermore update the distribution of the two closely related species Gerris gibbifer Schummel, 1832 and G. maculatus Tamanini, 1946 in southeastern Europe. Gerris maculatus is recorded for the first time from Hungary, Montenegro and Slovenia, and the first detailed localities from Romania and Serbia are given. This paper is a faunistic review of 23 species of the family Saldidae occurring in Poland. The study was based on the original papers relating to the territory of Poland and on materials deposited in several institutions, i.e. University of Opole (UO), Museum and Institute of Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw (ZMPA), and in Nature Collections of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (ZPUAM). This paper presented the results of the studies on true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) alongside evaluating their potential usefulness in biomonitoring and bioindication. The studies were carried out in May and August of 2017. Three research sites situated at various distances from the full-scale plants (Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn SA, Zakłady Chemiczne Petrochemia-Blachownia SA, Zakłady Koksownicze ArcelorMittal Poland Zdzieszowice) and the control area out of reach of the emission of chemical pollutants, i.e. the meadows in the Chrząstowice area of Natura 2000, have been selected for studies.
